19 and Learning

The young boy working at Banana Republic(Hotel not clothing store) was only 19, but so aware of the meaning to his life. He looked just like a futbol player, tall, lean, and again-the crazy hair-Mohawkesque(just made that up, but sounds cool). He loves futbol and psychology and we had great discussions about materialism and the difference between living in materialism and living in poverty. He does not find importance with materialistic items rather he holds the most importance in his family, friends, and education.  He shares with me how it's not common for Hondurans to study psychology and there are not many professors that teach it. He says that he reads independently most of the time. He reminds me of myself when younger-a love for sports and a love for psychology-reading everything I could get my hands on.

Like the old me, he never purchased an iPhone because he doesn't need something that extravagant.  I told him how I recently got one just last year and I only got one because it was "Free." That would motivate anyone to turn to the updated, must have technology. He seemed like such a strong, responsible boy that he would decline it.

When it comes to violence, he explains the gang situation and the crime in each city. La Ceiba is pretty safe and the bottom of the radar for crime, but San Pedro is a whole other story.  There is such strong gang rivalry and the use of weapons is out of control. He said that citizens carry more weapons that police and they use them at each and every opportunity.  Some of the common weapons include: guns and machetes(large knifes that are very sharp. He shared that it's difficult being part of a country that is soley known for it's violence.  There are many cities that are safe including La Ceiba, but people just think of drugs and violence.

As I noticed and he pointed out, La Ceiba actually has a high population of the wealthy.  Then go around in their Mercedes and BMWs and don't associate themselves with those less fortunate.  This is common of many countries, especially India.  It's a lack of empathy for their own people and own country and an obsession with greed, wealth, and materialism.  It's a very sad life and I come across these people often.  There is such emptiness in their hearts and in the meantime this young boy who is just 19 can look his country and the world in such a kind, caring, realistic, analytical way.
While I was only there for two days, I made sure to go downstairs and talk with him at night.  Such a doll-wish we took a photo together, but sometimes we just remember moments and words. A photo can't do the same job this post does- something I realize more and more as I travel...

Most people with money live in La Ceiba.

Honduras At First Glance

- Big use of coins over the paper currency
- The girls and women like to dress in tight and short clothing
- The men dress nice-more professional and fashionable
- Spanish is understood in their own version
- Abundance of taxis that beep at you constantly to tell you
   they're available.
 - Jesus surrounds you and keeps you safe i.e.
*Jesus- a poster hung up in customs station area
*Jesus on the bus counter, windshield, bumper
*Jesus around people's necks.

Usually I am religiously, spiritually, and emotionally satisfied when arriving in a Jesus driven country. It's so satisfying to know that people crave And grow with Jesus Christ. It's wonderful being able to attend church and spend time with locals and listen to people's stories and encounters with him.
True faith United! Lets see what Honduras has to bring to the table!

Bus Love Diaries

Well, besides the whole money thing with Orville, we were having some fun on the bus with the conductor, Macias.  He was 20 years old and looked like Pauly D from the Jersey Shore(i.e.  looked like an Italian guido with muscles and chains around his neck and a spiked up hairstyle).  He wore a Qatar Airways futbol jersey and a backwards hat with some pimped out leather shoes.

As I mentioned previously, it was pouring rain outside and I just wanted some peace, but it was not happening on this bus ride. After the food incident, Orville and I broke the silence and started making jokes about the conductor.  There he goes up and down the aisle shouting some Honduran Spanish, which sounded like Mexican-fast and hard to follow. He was definitely trying to get some attention walking up and down the aisles.

Orville began talking to him in Spanish(Orville's Spanish is extremely clear and slow). He is asking him where he grew up and then he introduces me and says I'm from America and her name is Priscilla.  When he looks at me it is more like staring. I can tell where this is going as he gives me the "Honduran bedroom eyes." Whatever those must look like-I clearly just found out.

He had a brand new phone and we asked him where he got it and he said, "His girlfriend bought it for him." He says  that she is not special rather she just buys him gifts.  We are laughing and cracking up that he has a sugar mama.

Priscilla, "Well clearly you are not available because you have a girlfriend."
Macias, "Everyone has one, two, three girlfriends, this is normal."
Priscilla, "That is universally normal. " lol
Macias, "I want to be with you."
Priscilla, "Que?"
Macias, "I love you."
Priscilla, "You just met me."

Since we are speaking two different kinds of Spanish, he may be hearing something different. I turn into a shy, 10 year old and try to hide out behind my seat.  I have such a great seat that I can feel the engine right underneath my butt with the stop and go-stop and go.  It's just wonderful.  While the bus is driving slower, the love cries are growing stronger.

He keeps staring at me as he walks up and down the aisles turning lights on and off asking ten times where people are going or just being obnoxious with his loud Spanish.

He asks me to close my window and I have no idea what he is saying so I say,"No entiendo." His Spanish seriously sounds like a whole new language.

As Orville is talking with him, Macias has no problem understanding him and Orville's Spanish is very clear like mine. When the lights go out, it is the scariest time as he comes back and just stands there staring at me in the dark.

Since we cannot communicate, he is pulling Orville into the conversation and using him as a translator basically asking where I live and if he could come back with me.  out and he is confessing his love for me to Orville and Orville is translating.   And then Orville is telling me each detail of his words.
"He loves you."
" He really love you."
"He wants you to take him with you to Nicaragua"

"Each place you go, he will follow you."
"He can keep you safe when traveling."

With each response Macias was shouting out loud like an Italian."I love you, I love you, take me take me!"

He does not know any English, but all of a sudden he knows I love you and take me with you.  While he is shouting, the tourist in the middle of the bus is turning around laughing. I am so embarrassed and tell him to please lower his voice.  He walks away and then he comes back and takes my hand, "I love you."
Priscilla, "I have a boyfriend I love and care about."
There he goes walking towards the front of the bus and back again
Macias, " I love you Ricilla. I love you."
Priscilla," I'm getting married and we are going to have children when I arrive home."
Macias looks very sad and he finally gets busy with his actual job.

What an action packed bus ride. Can we say exhausted as loud as Macias can shout, "I love you."

It was quite the entertainment. It was nice for me to take a break and someone else do the entertaining for a night

Goallllll

When you watch the World Cup, the announcer shouts, "Goalllll" when they score.  When Priscilla see's a cute futbol player from the local Honduras team, she shouts, "Goalllllll" in her head.

With my second customs, I was not too excited as this was the "Long Haul to Honduras" trip.  When I walked up and saw a bunch of men dressed in light blue futbol uniforms.  They were tall, tan, with a futbol physique and the exotic Cristian Reynaldo hairstyles. Things became a bit more interesting especially with my summer futbol obsession.

I chatted with one of them while casually getting my passport stamped and he said they are a local team of Honduras in their mid 20s. The man at the window was so patient with me as I was filling out my form and staring at the futbol players. I still had World Cup Fever and there were three of them that created a great first sight for entrance into Honduras. The kind man at the window laughed at me as I tried to fill out my form, watch the cute futbol players, and exchange money in Spanish with three different people.

Usually, I do Not exchange my money at a border, but I had no choice.  These guys walk around with huge wads of cash usually giving you a poor exchange rate. I told the other two to go away and stuck with the one who was giving me an excellent rate.  I looked at him like, "Wow how are you giving this rate?" I thanked him for his honesty and gave him a guy handshake.

My goal was to finish everything in time so I could go talk to the players, but I watched the last one step on the bus.

It was too late. Sad to see you go, but it was sadder to
walk up the road to catch a bus with my backpack and one in front and 2 large water bottles...just saying:)
