In the very nice San Pedro bus terminal, there are many local restaurants and stores to shop. It's quite unexpected to come across a bus terminal as fancy as that one in San Pedro. San Pedro is the second or third most dangerous city in the world. From the outside, the real city does look full of poverty, the underprivileged, big families, and crime and violence at increased rates.
Then you have a huge recently constructed bus terminal that is pretty much considered a mall.
As far as food, they have Dunkin Donuts, Burger King, Pizza hut, KFC-all your American junk. I definitely did not want to eat that, but I just wanted something local and something light. The local places have the main local specialties such as: red beans and rice, tamales, pollo asado and fries, soup, and other items like legumes- veggies. I decided to just order some veggies.
The lady was really nice and she had remembered me inquiring about food before. She said 35 Lempiras and being in Belize just a few hours ago, my head was just trained to think in Belize currency. I calculated in my head and said , "Disculpame no lo Quiero."
When I walked away I realized that Belize is 2 and Lempira is 20. She was charging me two dollars and I thought she was charging ten.
I was too embarrassed to go back and explain myself and also out of time. Four currencies-dollar, quetzal, Belize, Lempira is one big confusing conversion.
4 currencies in one day=Confusion
